Ħamrun stun leaders Valletta as Birkirkara overcome nine-man Balzan

Ħamrun Spartans boosted their Top Six ambitions with an important 2-1 victory over VBET Malta Premier League leaders Valletta on Sunday afternoon, while Birkirkara returned to winning ways after defeating nine-man Balzan 2-0.

A first-half double from Lucas Villela proved decisive for Marco Amelia’s Ħamrun, who climbed to fifth place on 16 points, while two penalties from Franklin Sasere secured three valuable points for Birkirkara.

Despite their defeat, Valletta remained at the top of the standings with 22 points, five ahead of Marsaxlokk and Sliema Wanderers.

Valletta 1-2 Ħamrun Spartans

Ħamrun Spartans produced an impressive first-half display before surviving a determined Valletta comeback to register their fourth league victory of the season.

Valletta made a promising start and almost took an early lead when captain Brandon Paiber struck the woodwork from close range.

Ħamrun responded through Jake Grech, who fired over the crossbar from inside the penalty area as both sides sought to establish control.

The Spartans eventually broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute when Lucas Villela found space inside the penalty area and directed a low drive beyond goalkeeper Adilson Maringa into the far corner.

Valletta should have restored parity shortly afterwards, but Bruno Gomes squandered an excellent opportunity when he fired wide from point-blank range.

That miss proved costly as Ħamrun doubled their advantage in the 39th minute.

Villela was again the protagonist, connecting with a fine left-footed volley that beat Maringa at the same post to complete his brace.

The Brazilian attacker almost completed his hat-trick before the interval, sending another low effort narrowly wide of the target.

At the other end, Ħamrun goalkeeper Gabriele Marcheggiani produced an important close-range save to preserve his side’s two-goal advantage at half-time.

Valletta coach Thane Micallef responded by introducing Taylor Aldama and Roko Prsa at the beginning of the second half in an attempt to turn the contest around.

The Citizens emerged with renewed determination and reduced the deficit in the 53rd minute when Emmanuel Mbende rose highest to power a header into the net.

The goal gave Valletta fresh impetus as they pushed forward in search of an equaliser.

Paiber forced Marcheggiani into another save, but Sava Radic was unable to capitalise on the rebound, sending his effort wide.

As Valletta committed more players forward, Ħamrun attempted to exploit the spaces left behind through counterattacks.

However, despite enjoying considerable territorial superiority during the second half, the Citizens struggled to create further clear-cut opportunities.

Amelia’s players remained disciplined defensively and successfully protected their slender advantage until the final whistle.

The victory represented an important result for Ħamrun in their pursuit of a Top Six finish, while Valletta missed the opportunity to extend their advantage at the summit.

Balzan 0-2 Birkirkara

Birkirkara revived their hopes of securing a Top Six finish after Franklin Sasere converted two penalties in a 2-0 victory over Balzan, who ended the encounter with nine players.

The Stripes returned to winning ways after collecting just one point from their previous three matches, while Balzan suffered their second defeat in three outings.

Birkirkara coach Paul Zammit welcomed back Fernandinho following suspension but was without the suspended Frazan. Balzan, meanwhile, were missing Olu Awosanya and Nikola Ignjantovic.

Birkirkara started brightly, with Fernandinho testing goalkeeper Dylan Ciappara inside the opening minute.

The visitors continued to threaten when Amarildo unleashed a powerful effort that Ciappara managed to divert onto the post.

Balzan gradually settled into the encounter and came close through Lucas Macula, whose overhead kick sailed narrowly over the crossbar.

The hosts subsequently created further opportunities, but Birkirkara goalkeeper Fabrice Ondoa denied both Leo Fernandes and Macula.

The breakthrough arrived in first-half stoppage time when Jan Busuttil was fouled by Macula on the edge of the penalty area.

Referee Slobodan Petrovic awarded a penalty, and Sasere stepped forward to convert confidently, giving Birkirkara a slender advantage at the interval.

Balzan attempted to respond after the restart, but Birkirkara continued to threaten whenever they pushed forward.

Midway through the second half, Pablo Gabriel came close to extending the Stripes’
