The Isla (Senglea) Local Council has opened the World War II shelters beneath the bastions to the public as part of an open day.
Mayor Clive Pulis also pledged, alongside Malta’s latest vigilante archaeologist, Conrad Neil Gatt, that the Local Council would continue its efforts to open these shelters to the public.
Many of the shelters had been closed to the public but have recently been gradually reopened amid increased awareness and following extensive restoration work across Malta’s bastions, which has restored many of the abandoned shelters.
The shelters were dug before the Second World War and were used during the war to provide cover from Nazi bombings. Up to 4,000 Maltese people also lived in these shelters during the course of the war.
Today’s open day in Senglea was organised by the Local Council and the Ministry for Local Government.
