At a political rally earlier today, Prime Minister Robert Abela announced a further reduction in the income tax of married couples, which will be announced in tomorrow’s Budget.
The Prime Minister also announced a €10 weekly increase in pensions.
He also condemned the Opposition for intending to cut energy and fuel subsidies and said that these subsidies have kept the economy afloat and avoided mass protests in Malta.
He compared Malta with other European countries where protests are taking place and said that Malta had avoided this scenario thanks to its subsidies. He pledged that the subsidies would continue.
Fuel and electricity subsidies this year have cost up to €400 million, reaching as high as 1.6% of GDP.
