Let’s not deceive ourselves: evil is winning

Many individuals who should know better are deceiving themselves into believing their own lies, but especially that our society is mostly, normally, functionally normal. Normality in liberal-democratic society comes with a collective consensus about basic morality and constitutional rights. Let’s be brutally honest: we don’t have this at the moment, and we are currently living under an illiberal regime that has captured the state and is decapitating our social mores and relationships.

We can never forget Yorgen Fenech’s verdict, which Labour wants us to forget with its flurry of populist measures. This verdict has been a damning reflection of how our society has come to accept and normalise evil. After years of constant propaganda by Labour invoking hatred against free speech, journalism and the family of the murdered journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, Labour is obviously an enabler and a direct contributor to the outcome of the verdict.

Our society has been poisoned by gross indifference and an amorality that has normalised the suppression and murder of a local journalist. Labour didn’t achieve this by itself: it achieved it with a very corrupt intelligentsia from the University of Malta, which has significantly contributed to Labour’s illiberal discourse. Today, academics are deluding themselves by virtue-signalling their support for third-country nationals in relation to the recent budget measures. Palestine was used as another convenient excuse by these academics and their left-wing hangers-on to create a pseudo-moral facade for their immoral indifference to the nation’s core problems. The intellectual dishonesty and deception are outrageous and gross, not to mention the fact that the pro-Palestinian facade was mainly used by these academics to delegitimise an Opposition figure who has consistently supported the liberal discourse on free speech and justice. Making this pro-Palestine position more farcical is the acceptance and open support of the University of Malta of the Chinese state including by freely sharing its research with it: a concern that European nation-states may consider as a national security issue.

Standing out from this crowd of intellectuals who have corrupted public discourse are individuals like Arnold Cassola and Vicky Anne Cremona: they are the exceptions.

After Daphne Caruana Galizia was murdered, the University of Malta was very quick to delegitimise her. The pro-rector, Carmen Sammut, published a paper that reduced her credentials in independent journalism to partisan mockery. Then we had the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Dominic Fenech, who advocated for corrupt Labour Party politicians associated with Yorgen Fenech. Another professor, also in the Department of History, Simon Mercieca, literally spent years advocating for and supporting Yorgen Fenech while defaming and attacking the family of the murdered journalist.

Now, we have another University professor who was exculpated for conducting a survey aimed at jurors in Yorgen Fenech’s trial, with the deliberate aim of helping Yorgen Fenech’s defence.

The outrageous decision by the Rector, Frank Bezzina, who is also Vince Marmara’s own friend, is a stain not just on the national institution; it is a stain on the whole country that we have produced a national academic institution that is literally engaged in helping the Mafia and spreading toxic deception in public and political discourse.

All of this is now normal. Having our intellectual elite on the side of the Mafia is now considered normal in our country. Finance Minister Clyde Caruana has recently awarded these individuals six-figure annual salaries.

Note that no one within the University will take this as a major issue, except for the usual exceptions, such as Arnold Cassola. They are all bound by silence and submission to their deans, with the hope of getting in line for promotions. Their only way of invoking some form of public discourse to ensure their relevance is to hone in on identity issues and Palestine, deceiving the public with their self-interest as they avoid the national issues that could actually hurt their career prospects.

They are all going to accept that the University of Malta is accepting Vince Marmara as one of them, with the submission of desperate pip-squeaks. Palestine will come again so that we forget about all of this gross evil.

This institution will never heal until it is relieved of political control and transferred to private management. However, this will not take place under our general social and political conditions. Evil is winning.
