Agius, who earned 120 international caps during his distinguished playing career, returns to a familiar role, having previously coached the national Under-21 side for two years until 2023.
The former Valletta stalwart subsequently pursued coaching opportunities abroad, including a spell in Indonesia, before returning to Maltese football, where he most recently worked in the Premier League.
Agius takes charge with immediate effect and will oversee preparations for the national team’s training camp scheduled for next week.
His appointment signals a return to the national team set-up for one of Malta’s most experienced former internationals, who brings considerable knowledge of the domestic game and experience in developing young players.
Meanwhile, the Malta FA expressed its appreciation to outgoing Under-21 coach Davide Mazzotta, who was responsible for the team during its most recent campaign.
Mazzotta will remain within the Association’s technical structure, continuing as head coach of the Malta Under-16 national team.
He will also assume a more prominent role in grassroots football, spearheading a new development project which the Malta FA is expected to announce shortly.
The changes form part of the Association’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its national team structures and youth development programmes.
