Comino’s second chance: Can Malta save its paradise island?

Malta’s smallest inhabited island, Comino, has long been synonymous with the Blue Lagoon – an iconic stretch of crystal-clear water that drew in visitors in their thousands. But as highlighted in a recent BBC Travel feature, the island’s future hangs in balance. Many years of unchecked commercial exploitation have transformed Comino from a pristine retreat into…

The Battle for Comino: interview with Andre Callus

When Moviment Graffitti activists stormed Comino’s Blue Lagoon, removing deckchairs and umbrellas in protest, it was more than just an act of defiance. It was a symptom of a larger issue: Malta’s lack of environmental enforcement. “The authorities only act when they feel pressure from large numbers of angry people,” said Andre Callus, the de…

Illegal hunting in Malta’s protected bird sanctuaries sparks urgent need for action

Two cases of illegal hunting were reported in Malta‘s protected bird sanctuaries, namely Buskett and Comino, this month, raising an alarm for lax enforcement of conservation laws. BirdLife Malta had reported both incidents to authorities, stressing that more monitoring and protection were needed in these areas. On 22nd November, hunters were caught in the Buskett sanctuary following woodcocks. Shotguns were confiscated by the Environmental Protection Unit and charges will be brought against the offenders. On 27th November, a hunter accompanied by dogs was filmed on Comino, yet another protected zone. The…

  • Interview with Melo Hili over Hili Ventures’ Comino project

Interview with Melo Hili over Hili Ventures’ Comino project

Following my articles on the Comino project by Hili Hospitality, a subsidiary of Hili Ventures, I interviewed the CEO of Hili Ventures, Melo Hili about the project. I’m not convinced by his answers in the sense that I still think that the project is being driven forward more with a sense of vanity to acquire…

  • It could be vanity

    It could be vanity

Some readers replied to my post on Hili’s project in Comino saying that the land is prime real estate and that it’s a good investment as a beach resort and tourist hub etc… Sure. I know. Thanks. I’m stupid, but I am not that stupid. My point is, why Comino? There is plenty of other…

  • Sincerely, I do not understand

    Sincerely, I do not understand

I am not very familiar with Hili’s business empire but I may get to start researching it soon, in a similar way I did with the finances and history of Tumas Group. My curiosity has been aroused by bafflement because sincerely, I’m baffled and confused and I need to understand. Or maybe, I’m totally dumb…

  • First they take Comino. Now, they take Delimara

First they take Comino. Now, they take Delimara

From Mafia State to Mad Max-style country-falling-apart. Jungle rules. Labour is bringing out the worse out of this country and is turning it into its own gangland jungle. I’m sorry that I have to elaborate for foreign readers. This is what’s happening in Malta, right now. Thugs associated with Labour Party politicians invade public spaces…

  • The fight against Labour is the fight for our country

The fight against Labour is the fight for our country

This is what we are fighting against. As the Labour Party encroaches on public land to allocate it to special interests and its friends, the general public and civil society are engaged in trying to take back what Labour is stealing from them. Yesterday, as Moviment Graffitti held another protest in Comino in another attempt…

  • Michael Zammit Tabona pays Labour a minimum €100,000 every year

Michael Zammit Tabona pays Labour a minimum €100,000 every year

Hotelier and owner of the Captain Morgan ferry service Michae Zammit Tabona has come out against capping visitors to Comino. He describes the proposal as “communist”. There is nothing communist in protecting sensitive environment areas by capping visitors. Zammit Tabona doesn’t agree though cos he only thinks about making money at any cost even if…

  • This is what’s actually happening while Robert Abela tells you that he is working for you

This is what’s actually happening while Robert Abela tells you that he is working for you

Robert Abela tells you that he is working for you and making sure you are not hit by inflation but the reality is that as most people have to work extra jobs to make ends meet and young people get priced out of the property market, Robert Abela is working for the rent-seeking economy. This…

  • No more pretenses

    No more pretenses

The government is no longer trying to make any pretences about not being a mafia state. The architect of the collapse of rule of law in Malta that enabled rampant corruption by Joseph Muscat and his cabal and the eventual murder of a journalist has been placed on the government’s payroll. Previous Attorney-General Peter Grech,…

  • An imbecile’s extremes

    An imbecile’s extremes

Miriam Dalli’s “extremism” comments directed at environmentalists during a recent debate didn’t age quite well. Days later, Moviment Graffitti cleared Comino’s Blue Lagoon of the irregular deckchairs after it was expropriated illegally. Moviment Graffitti basically proved that our government isn’t even capable of enforcing basic rules and regulations as it prefers to run Malta with…
