Right before Hamas conducted its terroristic attacks last Sunday, Turkey began an intensive bombing campaign in north-western Syria hitting Kurdish militants, civilian infrastructure, and oil fields, aimed at intimidating the US forces in the area and disrupting Kurdish groups. It has been reported that in the last 72 hours, Turkey has conducted 145 airstrikes on 195 targets and killed up to 11 civilians apart from dozens of Kurdish militants. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan once again condemned the downing of a Turkish drone by US forces and the US forces in north-eastern Syria supporting the Kurdish forces.
Turkey’s security interests are growing ever antagonistic to those of other NATO members. Turkey has issues with the US in Syria, Greece in Cyprus, Sweden, and Finland over Kurdish refugees, not to mention Turkey’s backing and support of Hamas which is considered a terrorist organization both in the US and in the EU. On Russia and Ukraine, Turkey has remained neutral. In practice, it would be stupid of Europeans to think that they can rely in any way on Erdogan’s Turkey in matters of war and defense.
