Profits and revenues of major food importer and distributor M&Z soared in 2022

Among the large food importers and distributors in Malta that have monopoly power in a very small market is M&Z which is on the Malta Stock Exchange (MZ) and its biggest shareholders are Paul Camilleri and Thomas Agius-Vadala.

The company’s revenue soared by 24% in 2022 from 2021 reaching levels even higher than 2019 – and this despite the fact that consumption was still lower. Profits also increased substantially. Indeed, according to the latest results of major food importer and distributor, Alex Agius Saliba does make a good point.

In 2022, profitability went significantly down according to your extracts, so much so that it reached 2019 levels. This goes to show that costs have also increased for importers thus making Agius Saliba look dumb.

Looking at the local context, with so many outlets, Lidl has probably the largest local market share. It also benefits from economies of scale and local tax beneifts.

Despite this, interestingly Agius Saliba singled out local importers. The question could be, is there an underlying reason?

  3. […] Profitability for M&Z seems to be slightly lower for 2022 compared to 2019 with results for the first half of the year, although a more detailed account would be needed that includes the second half of the year. What is also important to consider and this is something that I should have checked more thoroughly are the consumption expenditure levels in relation to tourist arrivals as these are variables that strongly influence the numbers for food importers.
