The Nationalist Party’s parliamentary group held a meeting last Wednesday to discuss Labour’s proposed reforms on asset freezes, which are aimed at helping Joseph Muscat prevent his assets from being frozen. Joe Giglio, PN’s spokesperson for home affairs, is strongly supporting this bill, and his position led to a heated exchange within the group. Joe Giglio apart from being the lawyer for Pilatus Bank was, bizarrely, also the best man for Prime Minister Robert Abela’s wedding.
There seems to be a lot of support from criminal lawyers over Labour’s proposed reforms, and this is understandable given that many of them are paid for their services with illicit proceeds. The reforms apart from helping organised crime and going against well-established legal standards, may also jeapordise once again Malta’s status with the FATF.
I have also tried contacting Joe Giglio himself but he was unavailable and will keep trying over the weekend.
