Robert Abela and Lydia Abela made two purchases of land surrounding their property in Xewkija that is intended to be developed as a guest house. The purchases were made with Robert Abela’s capital which was undeclared and under the name of his wife. Coincidentally or not, one of the shareholders of the second piece of land which Robert Abela bought was Saviour Micallef, the most controversial architect in Gozo and one of the most preferred architects of Joseph Portelli. Saviour Micallef, along with his wife Francine, owns Micsav Limited, which happened to be one of the shareholders of the second plot of land acquired by Robert Abela in Xewkija.
Saviour Micallef ranks as one of the top ten architects in Malta who has permits that are accepted in ODZ with a roughly 89% acceptance rate of his applications. He is currently involved in the proposal for the construction of a large old people’s home in Għarb, designed bizarre and horribly ugly buildings, was involved in applications that destroy historical heritage, proposed modern hotels in historic town squares in Gozo, was involved in the collapse of a wall during the restoration of the Citadella, proposed roads to nowhere, designed a pool for Joseph Portelli in a pristine valley, and the list of destruction goes on. There’s too many to mention.
Saviour Micallef didn’t need to sell any land to Robert Abela to get preferential treatment and have his controversial projects accepted by the Planning Authority, but it may surely help his relationship with the real-estate Premier.
