The new FIAU Director Alfred ?ammit

The FIAU has announced today the appointment of its new director, Alfred Zammit, previously a deputy director to the same entity, and his appointment was confirmed by the board. Currently, the board of the FIAU is chaired by Kenneth Farrugia in a bizarre arrangement that also carries a conflict of interest in his role as CEO of the MFSA.

Alfred ?ammit is no stranger to controversy. He was involved in the suspension of police inspector Jonathan Ferris from the FIAU, a dismissal that the court found to be unlawful. Jonathan Ferris is a whistle-blower and previous police inspector who was dismissed from the police after discovering there was reluctance and inaction by the authorities to act on Pilatus Bank and its extended activities on money laundering and corruption in Malta. Alfred ?ammit was also accused of confirming that Pilatus Bank’s documents that were submitted to the FIAU complied with the law.

Alfred ?ammit defended himself against these allegations saying it was not true that his comments in an FIAU report gave a “clean bill of health” to Pilatus Bank. You can read his testimony to the public inquiry here. Alfred ?ammit also stated that the police should have taken action based on the information that the FIAU had provided them.

Nowadays, there are no pretensions by the authorities, namely the Police and the Attorney-General, about not wanting to prosecute Pilatus Bank officials. They have admitted it themselves and are even fighting in court in a civil case opened by NGO Repubblika to avoid taking any action.
