Joe Giglio has been removed from his role of Opposition spokespreson for Home Affairs

The Nationalist Party has made its own reshuffle, probably as a strategic response to Robert Abela’s pseudo-reshuffle. More importantly, PN’s reshuffle is significant for removing Joe Giglio as spokesperson of Home Affairs and replacing him with Darren Carabott, currently the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee.

Darren Crabott’s performance at the PAC has been nothing but stellar and by choosing him as their spokesperson for Home Affairs, PN is indicating that their appointments are being made according to the national interest and not according to what they perceive as electoral opportunities.

Joe Giglio is one of Malta’s most prominent criminal lawyers, having defended some of the worst money-laundering offenders, such as the bankers of Pilatus Bank. His appointment as Shadow Minister for Home Affairs was made out of sheer political opportunism, with the lingering principle in mind, that popular criminal lawyers may bring back that old mantra of competence to PN, only that it didn’t because these are not the 1950s. Joe Giglio didn’t make the PN look more serious and more competent, he made PN look as corrupt as Labour.

What’s also noteworthy in this reshuffle is they have also replaced the Energy spokesperson, Mark Anthony Sammut, with the other engineer, Ryan Callus. Mark Anthony Sammut is now responsible for Transport. I’m following Mark Anthony Sammut closely since I believe he has leadership material.
