Not actually a police officer, because Police Inspector Geoffrey Azzopardi eventually joined the European Prosecutor’s Office after he was sidelined by the Joseph Muscat administrations. Once Geoffrey Azzopardi had seen evidence of corruption between previous Transport Malta boss, Frederick Azzoparid and Yorgen Fenech that involved a project with EU funds, he made the necessary preparations to initiate a criminal case and investigation against Frederick Azzopardi and Yorgen Fenech in Malta. According to chats between Frederick Azzopardi and Yorgen Fenech, Frederick Azzopardi asked Yorgen Fenech as much as ย4.5 million in bribes.
The evidence (Yorgen Fenech’s chats) was originally submitted to OLAF and the EU Proesecutor’s office by Arnold Cassola upon which action was taken immediately. Geoffrey Azzopardi is set to join the Office of the Attorney General to become one of its most senior employees following the departure of Philip Galea Farrugia. Court documents clearly show that the case against Frederick Azzopardi was brought forward by the European Prosecutor’s Office.
