In a very bizarre interview on Newsbook’s video programme hosted by Andrew Azzopardi, Labour MP Carmelo Abela claimed that Jason Azzopardi is siding with criminals, and challenged me to present the evidence against him to the police. Carmelo Abela wants to imply that his alleged involvement in the infamous heist of HSBC Bank’s HQ in Qormi, is only being attributed to him exclusively by the Degoriogrio brothers. Had that been the case, Carmelo Abela would have been very confident in his innocence, instead he is giving very tense and confusing interviews that ultimately don’t make any sense.
Why would I be the one to present the evidence against Carmelo Abela? The Police already have the evidence against Carmelo Abela, namely, a security card and a video he had given to the robbers to access the bank’s safe room where the money was located. There have also been other witnesses who named Carmelo Abela’s participation. The HSBC security team is also convinced that he is the most highly likely person to have been the bank’s mole which helped the robbers. In fact, so far, the bank’s main contact and source with the robbers has never been outed by the bank, and neither has he been prosecuted. I wonder why is that?
So, clearly, this is not a conspiracy against Carmelo Abela, and neither is it just a frivolous accusation by a couple of convicted criminals.ย Had the Degiorgio brothers accused Abela without the existence of the evidence at hand, Carmelo Abela would have most probably easily belied them, but Carmelo Abela knows he is guilty, knows that the evidence that incriminates him already exists and that he is not being rehabilitated along with the other Labour Party criminals, because the Prime Minister has been made aware of the full extent of Carmelo Abela’s case.
In addition, this is just a very narrow part of the story of the HSBC Qormi heist. There is also a wider context to this case with many other individuals involved, including previous Labour Minister and MP, Chris Cardona and his connections with organised criminal groups through David Gatt, a police officer turned gangster and criminal leader (he pretends he is a “Mafia Boss” but he is too small to entertain those aspirations, and instead, he has to make do as a sort of independent criminal contractor). Carmelo Abela couldn’t be involved with these criminals by himself and the information he passed to them was passed through other third parties. There are digital trails in this case that can be easily recovered.
Ultimately, I expect the new Police Assistant Commissioner, Fabian Fleri to make a public statement about this case. It’s of a grave concern that the public can’t even be informed by the Police whether one of its MPs is actually being investigated by the Police over a bank robbery and whether he will be arraigned for it. This is not a case over a private individual, he is a Member of Parliament, for crying out loud. The Police can’t keep acting as if everything is normal or that they have no responsibility whatsoever to inform the public about matters of national and public importance.
