Very often, people who are called out in public for their wrongdoing may try to explain themselves, unwittingly incriminating themselves even further in the process. I remember such a case very well when the previous Chief Risk Officer of Bank of Valletta, Miguel Borg sent me a reply about his Bank of Valletta loan to Steward Malta. He ended up resigning anyway.
Apparently, the previous members of the Malta Enterprise Investments Committee that approved Kurt Buhagiar‘s and Matthew Schembri‘s project on public land, have sent a statement to the press to “explain themselves”. I did not receive this statement so I am only quoting from The Times, but these fools, apparently admitted that they approved the project without doing any due diligence on the applicants.
Of course, they didn’t. They were directed by someone, probably by the Minister himself or Malta Enterprise’s CEO, Kurt Farrugia, to approve the project. Had they done any due diligence they would have known that one of the applicants, Kurt Buhjagiar, was arrested for human trafficking in Italy. The fact that no due diligence was being done was intentional, even if this was general practice, and not because of oversight.
Am I clutching at straws as I have been recently accused? I don’t think so.ย The situation can’t even be clearer. Had the right people been on these boards, the right processes executed and the due diligence made, Kurt Buhgiar and Matthew Schembri would have never been able to create an illegal project without the necessary planning permits that killed a construction worker. These people defending themselves are not only fraudulent criminals, but they are even unrepentant to the extent of justifying their stupid, horrible, and corrupt behaviour.
