Who are Malta’s Security Services?

During this week, two events took place which visually represented Robert Abela’s incompetence and lack of understanding of security matters at all levels, both on the granular and personal level, as well as on a national level. This week, Robert Abela was pelted with eggs as his security detail watched in awe, and in Parliament, he retracted his obtuse statements on European defense.

In principle, Malta doesn’t have a National Security Service and the government cabinet is rarely if ever informed of national security risks. What we have is the Maltese Security Services Act which provides for he creation of an entity that can tap communication devices and gather intelligence for the government and the police. As for foreign threats such as terrorism, the authorities receive help, support and intelligence from French and Italian services.

Under consecutive Labour governments, the secret services have been used for political purposes and at one point in time they also tapped and followed Daphne Caruana Galizia before she was murdered. They did this not to protect her, but to discover her sources. So, as one can imagine, most of the members of the MSS are not security or intelligence professionals, but simply ex-police members who are Labour Party diehards. As for their intelligence analysts, the MSS prefers to use foreign professionals because supposedly, they think these people would speak or leak less. In reality, and for many reasons, it is not recommendable to have foreign nationals under the employ of the national security services.

Apart from being filled with Labour Party diehards, the security services are also filled with diehard Joseph Muscat loyalists, but at this stage, I am doing free work for Robert Abela, so I rather cut this post short.

Meanwhile, here is a member of the Malta Security Services for a visual teaser. This is Christopher Sammut and apparently, also father to Davinia Sammut Hili who is a Labour Party MP. He also likes to take time out from secret servicing to support his daughter’s political campaign.

Very discrete indeed. Watch out for those eggs.
