ADPD Leader Sandra Gauci was not invited to the inauguration ceremony of the new President, but showed her support for the new President on social media. Probably, the old protocol for the seating of the inauguration was restricted to MPs, however society has changed ever since the rule was first applied.
The failure to invite the Green Party Leader to the President’s inauguration ceremony is deliberate, as the Office of the President conducts an exercise to gather people in the city to greet the President during the inauguration. The Office always has a difficult task in making people attend the ceremony. After a series of Presidents who failed to exude any charisma, expectations for the Presidency are low and people don’t consider it something worth giving too much attention. So, as one would expect, generally, people don’t cancel a workday to visit Valletta and watch the President getting inaugurated; instead, they’ll probably watch the inauguration at home n TV or the internet. So, it should come as no surprise that in order to have people in the streets waiting for the President, the Office of the President gets some help from the Labour Party to mobilise its people.
When the Office of the President and Labour Party associates were making sure to have enough people greeting the President in Valletta, they should have at least tried to do the right thing and make sure to invite all sections of society, including the largest political faction in Malta that is not in Parliament: the Greens.
Note, that Sandra Gauci, is Leader of ADPD as a volunteer and doesn’t earn a salary for what she does, which basically is the equivalent of a high-profile leadership job. The Presidency would do well to have the State showing some appreciation for Sandra Gauci and the Greens.
Sandra Gauci is contesting the European Parliament Elections.
