Magistrate Gabriella Vella is denied fixed point police security after her car was vandalised

The inquiring Magistrate Gabriella Vella, who is conducting the inquiry on the fraudulent public hospital deals, had her car vandalised and filed a police report. Subsequently, she was also denied fixed-point security near her residence by Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa.

Gafa has been citing staff and capital shortages for a long time, but of course, these can’t be excuses for failing to provide security to a Magistrate who is conducting the most high-profile investigation in political history, especially after having her car vandalised.

Both Joseph Muscat, currently under investigation by the Magistrate and Prime Minister Robert Abela have repeatedly attacked the Magistrate, while the Police never took the initiative to provide the security that is required. The Magistrate is also being allowed to drive her own car as opposed to many government officials and head of entities.

Like many, I’ve listened to the newly appointed President’s speech to the very end, and although the platitudes and the statements can’t be disagreed with, I’d expect the President to have taken or to eventually take a strong stand in defense of the judiciary at a time when the executive is trying to undermine it.
