Helena Dalli is publicly displaying her opportunistic and egomaniacal streak by complaining on the public broadcaster during the President’s inauguration ceremony that it was unfair for her not to be considered for the Presidency because she was part of Joseph Muscat’s cabinet. Her story is one of cowardice and outright opportunism.
I was still a Labour Party delegate in 2019 so I very well remember how cabinet ministers behaved during that year. Prior to Yorgen Fenech’s arrest, many of those who had inside information were jumping ship, and taking on new posts to distance themselves from Joseph Muscat and the incoming predicted troubles. People like me didn’t know what was coming, but it was obvious to us that something big was on the horizon, and many high-profile people in Labour wanted out.
One of these high-profile Labour Party figures who in 2019 fought tooth and nail for an exit strategy was Helena Dalli, who fought against then Prime Minister Joseph Muscat to nominate her as European Commissioner. There were other Labour Party figures who pitched their name for the post, but Helena Dalli had lobbied Joseph Muscat incessantly about this to the point that he eventually gave in to her and gave her what she wanted.
Helena Dalli is a coward because she wanted to become European Commissioner to avoid all the troubles that were ahead of the Labour Party. Cowardice and outright opportunism shouldn’t be characteristics of our President and this is why Helena Dalli should never become President. I too could have flown out of the country in 2019 as an ambassador to a Latin American country of my choice. I could have even chosen my own compound had I took that option. I chose to stay because I believe in a concept called “responsability” something that Helena Dalli seems to know nothing about.
