Yesterday in court, during a sitting of the social benefits fraud case, the indefatigable Jason Azzopardi mentioned for the first time Michael Falzon’s handler of the social benefits scandal: Mark Calleja (Il-Gulija). Jason Azzopardi was cross-examining the Director-General of Social Security Grazio (Grezzju) Barbara when he asked whether any applications for social security were referred to by political personnel to have their conclusions changed.
Initially, when taking the witness stand, Grazio Barbara denied that any applications were referred by political personnel, but retracted his remarks when Jason Azzopardi mentioned for the first time the name of Mark Calleja (Il-Gulija), who referred many cases to Minister Michael Falzon and his department officials to have their requests approved irrespective of the details of their case. Upon retracting his statement, Grazio Barbara was chided by the court and warned him to tell the truth.
Silvio Grixti is the only politician in the social benefits fraud case who has been arraigned in court, with Ministers and OPM officials and employees involved in the case so far spared from being either arraigned or even investigated.
