A conflicted and inexperienced team of prosecutors, who are paired with a conflicted and inexperienced team of police officers

Attorney General Victoria Buttigieg is meticulously trying to save Joseph Muscat and his friends from a prison sentence with her carefully coordinated work with Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa. Both of them seem to have the same aim with this case: to make it as easiest as possible for Joseph Muscat and his friends to win the case against them.

The most high profile political criminal case in our history is being led by an inexperienced and conflicted team of prosecutors. Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa has paired these prosecutors with an equally inexperienced and conflicted team of police officers. These are Superintendent Hubert Cini, who was just promoted recently, and Inspector Wayne Rodney Borg. Both of them have never dealt with money-laundering cases of this magnitude and we are not speaking of excessively very large numbers.

Both of these police officers may have a good track record and history, however the selection of Wayne Borg unto this case was intentionally made by Angelo Gafa as part of his “Go Easy” operation on Joseph Muscat. Wayne Borg is actually a Labourite, but so what? We all have our political preferences, yet this is also the most sensitive political criminal case in history. Wayne Borg’s family is close to Chris Cardona and the husband of his sister, Keith Azzopardi was actually the driver of Chris Cardona when Chris Cardona was Minister of Economy. That’s not a connection one can overlook easily. Being the driver of a Labour Minister signifies that you are well and deeply trusted by the Labour top brass (you get to be privy of confidential conversations).

Since we are mentioning Chris Cardona, it may also be a good idea for the press to call Superintendent Wayne Borg and ask him why Chris Cardona is not on the list of the people being charged in court over the Vitals and Steward deals given that Malta Enterprise and the Ministry of Economy were also facilitators and abettors of these fraudulent and corrupt deals.

The magistrate is also conflicted. Rachel Montebello and her family (her father, and her partner) have taken charge of an old Abbazzia, and have negotiated with the government to re-acquire parts of their long abandoned lands in Qala, Gozo. They are also challenging the government to re-acquire other long abandoned lands in Nadur, Gozo. It goes without saying that they are siphoning away money and property from the Abbazzia for themselves, rather than using it for the stated purpose of the Abbazia. Given this conflict with the government it is not appropriate for the magistrate to judge any case involving political persons or the government.
