Embattled Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has told OSCE Chairman and Malta’s Minister for Foreign Affairs that Armenia is seeking to abandon the OSCE Minsk Group discussions over Nagorno-Karabakh to conclude a peace deal with Azerbaijan instead. This was also Azerbaijan’s position in February before signing a preliminary agreement with Armenia in April.
The peace deal is being opposed in Armenia for allowing Azerbaijan to keep Nagorno-Karabakgh and also for handing it over four border villages in the Tavush region to Azerbiajan. Widespread daily street protests, led by the Opposition and Archbishop Bagrat Galstanian, are being held in the center of Armenia’s capital, Yerevan.
Armenians opposingย the handover confidently fear they will be cleansed from their lands following Azerbaijan’s ethnic displacement of Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh.
