Armenians have voiced concerns about the peace deal Armenia signed with Azerbaijan at the White House describing it as one-sided and favouring Azerbaijan. Critics say that the deal effectively recognises and rewards Azerbaijan’s ethnic cleansing of the Armenians from Artsakh, now Nagorno-Karabakh. The Armenian National Committee of America issued a statement declaring its concerns over the deal and said that peace can’t be brought by erasing Armenians from their lands and called for the return of Armenians to Nagorno-Karabakh.
Up to 100,000 Armenians were expelled from Nagorno-Karabakh following its invasion of Azerbaijan.
The peace deal also includes a clause saying that the OSCE’s Minsk process will be revoked. This was a proposal by Azerbaijan and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had accepted this proposal to conclude a peace deal with Azerbaijan. With the Minsk process closed, Azerbaijan will get to keep Nagorno-Karabakh and other territories which it conquered during its invasion. Protests in Armenia had taken place against this decision.
There were no celebrations in Yerevan, Armenia’s capital following the signing of the deal.
Azerbaijan still holds Armenian prisoners it had captured during the invasion including the previous leaders of Artsakh and President Donald Trump promised to broker their release.
