Yesterday in a press conference, Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev and Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a peace deal with US President Donald Trump supposedly ending the multi-decade conflict between them. The agreement calls on the OSCE to end the Minsk peace process, to end the years of enmity between the two countries and to open a new corridor linking Azerbaijan with its Nakhchivan region through Armenia. The corridor will be called Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity.
The EU High Representative Kaja Kallas issued a statement hailing the peace agreement and describing it as a significant step forward towards the normalisation process between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
In 2022 Azerbaijan invaded and occupied Artsakh: in Azeri, Nagorno-Karabakh. Tensions between the two countries were high since then with Armenia fearing the worst and another war with Azerbaijan that is claiming from Armenia even more territories. Azerbaijan’s aggression against Armenia and Russia’s failure to defend Armenia, is also pushing Armenia closer to the West and also increasing its military budget. Following the signing ceremony President Aliyev has stated that Armenia has to drop its territorial claims of Azerbaijan from its constitution. The reference that Aliyev is mentioning is an indirect reference in the Armenian Constitution to a document that refers to the reunification of Armenia with Artsakh. Pashinyan however had already indicated he will be moving on from this issue.
