Three nights after the first signs of hatching at Għadira Bay, conservation teams have completed a nest excavation to assess the outcome. The process was carried out to understand why only a small number of hatchlings emerged.
Out of the 104 eggs examined, the vast majority were found to be unfertilised and therefore could not develop. While this is not the ideal result, the team remains optimistic – celebrating the 22 healthy loggerhead turtles that successfully hatched and made their way to the sea.
This follows the magical moment earlier in the week when the first hatchlings from this nest began their journey under the watchful eyes of volunteers and ERA officials. Each new turtle is a valuable contribution to the survival of this endangered species.
With several more nests still being monitored across Malta and Gozo, the public is reminded to keep nesting areas dark, quiet, and undisturbed, helping give every hatchling the best possible start in life.
