Second turtle nest begins to hatch at Mellieħa Bay with 21 hatchlings reaching the sea

Following the successful emergence of 79 hatchlings from the first nest at Ġnejna Bay, Malta’s turtle nesting season continues on a hopeful note – the second nest at Mellieħa Bay has now started to hatch. On the first night of activity, 21 loggerhead turtle hatchlings made their way safely to the sea.

This latest development marks another important milestone in what is already a record-breaking season, with six confirmed nests across Malta and Gozo. The hatching at Ġnejna began earlier this month with 26 hatchlings emerging on the first night, eventually leading to the full success of the nest – a strong start to this year’s conservation efforts.

As more nests are expected to hatch in the coming weeks, the public is reminded to remain cautious around nesting areas. Reducing artificial light and noise is essential, as disorientation caused by these disturbances can threaten hatchling survival. Sticking to posted guidelines and avoiding interference ensures these vulnerable animals have the best possible start to life.

The Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) and Nature Trust – FEE Malta (NTM) continue to coordinate monitoring and emergency conservation measures, with the invaluable support of volunteers and the general public.
