In a heartening development for Malta’s marine conservation efforts, all 79 eggs from the turtle nest at Ġnejna Bay have successfully hatched. The event marks a significant milestone in this year’s nesting season, with conservationists hoping it signals the beginning of more strong hatchings to come.
The hatching at Ġnejna began with 26 loggerhead turtle hatchlings emerging on the first night, marking the start of what has become a record-breaking nesting season.
After several busy nights of monitoring, ERA officials and dedicated Nature Trust – FEE Malta (NTM) volunteers carefully opened the nest to confirm that all hatchlings had emerged. This vital step also allowed for the collection of important data that will support ongoing turtle conservation work across the islands.
Just days ago, ERA’s Compliance and Enforcement officers rescued a juvenile turtle entangled in a jumbo bag at sea – a stark reminder of the threats marine life faces due to pollution. That rescue, followed by the safe hatching of 79 baby turtles at Ġnejna, illustrates both the challenges and the hope driving Malta’s marine protection initiatives.
“This nest’s success shows us what is possible when proactive conservation and public cooperation come together,” an ERA spokesperson said. “But it also reminds us that our efforts must continue – from protecting nesting sites to keeping our seas clean.”
Attention now turns to the remaining five nests being monitored around the islands. Conservation teams remain on high alert to ensure each one is given the best possible chance of success.
