Juvenile turtle rescued from marine waste by ERA officers – Public urged to act responsibly at sea

While on duty at sea yesterday, officers from the Environment and Resources Authority’s (ERA) Compliance & Enforcement Unit rescued a juvenile turtle found entangled in a discarded jumbo bag and struggling to swim. The officers acted swiftly, notifying the Wildlife Rescue Team Malta, who immediately took over the animal’s care.

Now named Gabrielle, the young turtle was assessed by a veterinarian. Efforts are currently underway to save her injured right flipper, which was damaged due to the entanglement. The rescue comes just days after the discovery of turtle nests at ฤ nejna, Gฤงadira and Ramla l-ฤฆamra, highlighting the critical need to safeguard Maltaโ€™s marine life during this sensitive season.

ERA highlighted the importance of contacting the appropriate authorities – ERA or the Wildlife Rescue Team – in similar situations, as marine animals often require specialised care even after being freed.

This incident is a stark reminder of the dangers marine litter poses to local wildlife. ERA is calling on the public to dispose of waste responsibly, especially at sea, where plastic and debris can cause serious harm to turtles and other marine creatures.

A heartfelt thank you was extended to both the ERA officers and the Wildlife Rescue Team for their quick response and dedication to protecting marine life.
