The first signs of hatching have officially begun: 26 loggerhead turtle hatchlings emerged from the nest at Ġnejna Bay during the first night of activity.
This nest, discovered in early June, was the first of what has now become a record season, with six confirmed nests so far across Malta and Gozo – including sites in Għadira and Ramla l-Ħamra.
As more nests are expected to hatch in the coming days and weeks, the public is reminded to be extremely cautious near nesting sites. Artificial light, loud noise, or interference with the nests can disorient hatchlings and endanger their survival.
Authorities continue to monitor all active nests with the help of volunteers and emergency conservation measures coordinated by the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) and Nature Trust – FEE Malta.
Please continue to respect the protection zones and help give these hatchlings the best possible start on their journey to the sea.
