Sirens women crown unbeaten season with BOV Knockout triumph

The Sirens Women’s Water Polo Team has completed a historic clean sweep of all major domestic titles, capping off a remarkable season with a 17-14 victory over San Giljan in the BOV Women’s Knockout Final.

Sirens started strong in a thrilling, fast-paced match. Kaia Agius opened the scoring with a precise strike from six metres, but San Giljan quickly responded through Thea Abdilla. Agius was quick to restore the lead, and Chloe Amato extended the advantage to 3-1. Further goals from Kendra Navarro and Margarita Plevritou put Sirens firmly in control at 5-1. Late goals from Abby Bonello and Elise Gatt saw San Giljan close the gap, ending the first session at 5-3.

In the second quarter, Denise Micallef and Agius pushed the lead to 7-3. Although Gatt responded for San Giljan, Sirens struck again through Amato, Micallef, and Martha Perici Ferrante, making it 10-4. Ella Miceli kept San Giljan’s hopes alive, but Micallef and Elena Borg closed the half with Sirens ahead 11-6.

San Giljan fought back fiercely in the third session. Goals from Borg and Bonello, followed by a brilliant hat-trick from Profokieva—including two penalties—leveled the score at 11-11. Captain Maia Bonello then gave San Giljan their first lead. However, Sirens captain Micallef struck just before the buzzer to tie the game at 12-12 heading into the final quarter.

In the decisive final session, Sirens regained control. Agius and Plevritou restored the lead, and while Profokieva kept San Giljan in contention, Sirens extended the margin with goals from Zaira Bartolo and Agius. Gatt added a late goal for San Giljan, but Agius sealed the win with a clinical finish six seconds from time.

Having already won the BOV Winter League and BOV Summer Championship, Sirens entered the Knockout Final determined to complete the treble—and they delivered with style and grit. The triumph marks a season of total dominance, made even more significant as it coincides with the 100th Anniversary of the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta (ASA)—a landmark year for Maltese aquatic sports.

The team was presented with the BOV Knockout Trophy by Stefan Abela, Manager CSR at Bank of Valletta, and Karl Izzo, ASA President. The trophy adds to Sirens’ already gleaming collection for 2025, symbolising an era of unmatched excellence in local women’s water polo.

Bank of Valletta’s enduring partnership with the ASA continues to play a vital role in nurturing aquatic sports in Malta. As the ASA celebrates its centenary, BOV’s steadfast support reflects a broader commitment to Maltese sport, youth development, and national pride—helping build future champions and a stronger community through sport.
