Uneventful UN Conference on Palestine takes place with no results

The UN Conference on Palestine opened yesterday in New York but nothing new came out of it. No state recognised the state of Palestine during the conference as France postponed its recognition to September. Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa was present for the conference. Spain’s Minister for Foreign Affairs José Manuel Albares Bueno also attended the conference, but Spain had already recognised the State of Palestine.

France and Saudi Arabia originally postponed the conference due to the 12-Day War between Israel and Iran.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres opened the conference with a appealing the UN members to take irreversible steps to the creation of the State of Palestine to avoid a total breakdown of peace prospects. He condemned the attacks by Hamas of October 7, 2023, and described the subsequent Israeli bombardment of Gaza as “obliteration” with mass civilian casualties and starvation.

The Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa called for the disarmament of Hamas in line with the conditions by the Palestinian Authority for a Palestinian State. The aim for the Palestinian State recognition also includes the takeover of Gaza by the Palestinian Authority.

The conference is set to continue later today.
