During the 5th Meeting of the Global Alliance for the Implementation of the Two-State Solution, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot announced that the UN conference on Palestine in June will be chaired by France and Saudi Arabia. The United Nations High-level International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution will be held in New York on the 17th – 20th June. Malta’s Prime Minister, Robert Abela, announced that Malta will also be recognising the state of Palestine during this conference.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot also announced the main priorities for the June conference which include in the immediate term, a ceasefire, the return of all hostages held by Hamas and the return of humanitarian aid to Gaza. The French Minister however stated that peace required a long-term political solution especially to ensure the avoidance of further war, terrorism and the ongoing Israeli colonisation of the Palestinian West Bank. The solutions being proposed include the establishment of a Palestinian State, the disarmament of Hamas and strengthening Palestinian political factions which accept for the right of Israel to exist. Security cooperation with Israel was also mentioned.
The French Minister did not make reference to the pending arrest warrants against the incumbent Israeli Premier, Benjamin Netanyahu and his previous Defense Minister, by the International Criminal Court but mentioned the terrible suffering Palestinians in Gaza and their forced displacement.
