In a public letter sent to the President of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France is set to recognise the State of Palestine during the upcoming United Nation’s General Assembly in September. The UN Conference on Palestine that was supposed to be chaired by France and Saudi Arabia has been postponed due to the the 12 Day War between Israel and Iran. The conference was supposed to bring together European and Arab countries to collectively recognise the State of Palestine.
President Macron’s letter is also a response to the letter by Abbas sent in June outlining his priorities and aims with regard to the creation of a Palestinian State. In his letter, President Abbas outlined his support for a two-state solution. Both President Macron and President Abbas agree that the Palestinian Authority should have full control of all the Palestinian territories and that Hamas should be disarmed. The plan also includes Palestinian elections for 2026.
The US Secretary of State Marco Rubio condemned the announcement and said that, “This reckless decision only serves Hamas propaganda and sets back peace. It is a slap in the face to the victims of October 7th.”
Gaza is currently being starved after Israel destroyed its hospitals, infrastructure, blockaded aid, and banned humanitarian organisations such as UNRWA from Gaza. The Israeli government is also proudly promoting in public its plans for ethnic cleansing in Gaza.
