Keir Starmer backs away from recognition of Palestinian State and cites peace as a condition

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has made an announcement saying that a ceasefire in Gaza and a lasting peace should be conditions for a two-state solution for Palestine, implying that he won’t be backing France in its recognition of a Palestinian State next September. French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France will be recognising the state of Palestine at the Untied Nations General Assembly next September.

In his speech, the British Prime Minister also said that the UK is coordinating with the Jordanian authorities to air-drop aid into Gaza after Israel gave the green-light for humanitarian air-drops by foreign countries.

France will be recognising the Palestinian Authority as the legitimate governing body, supporting a plan outlined by President Mahmoud Abbas, outlining a plan for state recognition that includes an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the handover of the remaining Israeli hostages, and the disarmament of Hamas.

The Prime Minister’s speech follows a letter signed to him by up to 221 British MPsย urging him to recognise the State of Palestine. The list of MPs also includes members from the Scottish National Party, and a Conservative Party member. The letter also follows another letter by former British diplomats urging the Prime Minister to do the same.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio condemned France’s decision and described it as a reward for Hamas and an incentive to terror.
