In an exclusive interview with the Kyiv Post, the head of Ukraine’s intelligence service, Kyrylo Budanov, stated that the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is a strong supporter of Ukraine that believes arming Ukraine is in the interest of the United States. Sharing this view is also the US Special Envoy to Ukraine Keith Kellogg. Budanov also stated that he is optimistic over Ukraine’s relationships with the US and that he doesn’t view anyone in President Trump’s administration as an enemy of Ukraine.
When still a Senator during President Joe Biden’s Administration, Marco Rubio criticised President Biden for not giving enough weapons to Ukraine to win the war and providing it with just enough weapons to survive: a policy which is now seemingly being replicated by President Donald Trump.
The State Secretary’s stance on Ukraine became clearly divergent from that of the Trump administration when the State Department spokesperson, Tammy Bruce, placed full responsibility for the withholding of weapons sales and deliveries to Ukraine on President Trump. Just a few days later the State Secretary denied that there ever was a policy decision to withhold weapons from Ukraine.
The US government withheld weapons sales to Ukraine as it brokered a ceasefire deal with Russia but changed course following the breakdown in talks with Russia and Russia’s constant airstrikes on Ukrainian cities.
