In a press conference with NATO General-Secretary Mark Rutte, US President Donald Trump announced that the US is to sell up to $10 billion in weapons to Ukraine. The weapons are to be bought by NATO countries to replace existing weapons that will be sent to Ukraine.
Among the weapons included in the purchases are Patriot batteries, but no further details were provided, except that according to the US President, “it is a full complement”. The US may be selling ammunitions to US weapons already in use by Ukraine including F-16s and HIMARS.
Ukraine’s President Zelensky had previously reported that weapons shipments to Ukraine had already been on the way as of Saturday night. The decision reverses a previous US foreign policy stance not to sell any weapons to Ukraine. President Trump said that he changed his decision after realising that talking to Russia’s President Vladimir Putin wasn’t yielding any results. The President added that following every phone call with Putin, the First Lady used to inform him about Putin hitting at Ukrainian cities.
President Trump added that he would slap Russia would further sanctions in 50 days if Russia doesn’t conclude a ceasefire.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte told President Trump that he had taken the decision he hoped he would take. The Secretary-General added that this scheme was also part of NATO-member countries to reach their 5% target in defence spending.
