Israel is forcing the last remaining citizens in the north of Gaza, mainly in Gaza City to evacuate to the camps on the coast at Al-Mawasi. Following leaflets that were distributed to the remaining citizens urging them to flee, Israel began pummeling Gaza City with airstrikes and shelling. The Żejtun neighbourhood in particular is being shelled this morning. Multiple casualties are being reported as a result of the ongoing shelling.
Israel had previously committed to permanently occupy the north of Gaza, but the occupation of Gaza is now extending to most of the coastal enclave except for some areas outside Rafah and the coastal area where the Al-Mawasi camp is located. The occupation of Gaza is being opposed by many Israelis and massive protests have also taken place.
Yesterday at the Rafah crossing, Egyptian Foreign Minister Bader Abdel Ati, and Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa held a press conference and accused Israel for restricting aid flow to Gaza and urged it to allow more aid to enter Gaza. Gaza is still going through famine conditions after Israel restricted the flow of aid in March when it broke the ceasefire agreement with Hamas and renewed hostilities.
Meanwhile, Israeli Foreing Minister Gideon Sa’ar has proposed to the Israeli cabinet to shut down France’s Consulate in Jerusalem in response to France’s decision to recognise the State of Palestine in the upcoming UN General Assembly in September. The French Consulate in Jerusalem serves as the link between France and the Palestinian Authority. Other European consulates in Jerusalem also serve the same function.
