Turtle nesting season officially kicked off on Monday, 9th June, with the discovery of the first loggerhead turtle nest at Għajn Tuffieħa’s Ġnejna Bay. The nest was found by a Cleansing Division team during routine work and promptly reported to Nature Trust Malta (NTM-FEE), which is responsible for wildlife rescue and rehabilitation in collaboration with the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA).
ERA and NTM teams quickly secured the area and are now monitoring the nest around the clock. An emergency conservation order will be issued by ERA to safeguard the site and ensure no disturbance occurs during this critical period.
The loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), or il-fekruna l-komuni in Maltese, is an endangered species protected under both national and international legislation. Disturbing or harming the turtles, their nests, or eggs is strictly prohibited, with fines reaching up to €2,400 per egg in cases of destruction or illegal collection.
ERA’s Director of Regulatory Affairs, Aimee Brincat, urged the public to act responsibly. “If you see a turtle nesting, stay back, avoid noise and lights, and immediately report the sighting,” she said. Reports can be made to ERA on 22923500 or directly to NTM on 99999505.
