A third loggerhead turtle nest has been confirmed today at Ramla l-Ħamra beach in Gozo, after Nature Trust (NTM) volunteers spotted a turtle during an early morning patrol. The site was swiftly secured by the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) and NTM to protect the nest from disturbance.
This marks the third nest in just over a week, following earlier discoveries at Ġnejna Bay and Għadira Bay. The season officially began on 9th June, when a Cleansing Division team found the first nest during routine work at Ġnejna and alerted NTM. The second nest was identified on 11th June at Għadira by NTM volunteers.
All three nesting sites are now under 24/7 monitoring, with emergency conservation orders being issued by ERA to safeguard them during this critical period.
The loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), or il-fekruna l-komuni in Maltese, is an endangered species protected under both national and international legislation. Disturbing or harming turtles, their nests, or eggs is illegal, with fines of up to €2,400 per egg for violations.
ERA’s Director of Regulatory Affairs, Aimee Brincat, called for public vigilance and care: “If you see a turtle nesting, stay back, keep lights and noise to a minimum, and report the sighting immediately.”
