Armenia is ramping up its military budget for next year, following its loss of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) and the displacement of up to 100,000 Armenians last year. The Armenian military budget is set to rise by 20% next year and up to $1.72 billion. In contrast, Azerbaijan spends up to $5.5 billion per year on its military. Armenia’s defence spending will comprise up to 6% of its GDP with Azerbaijan spending up to 15% and more of its GDP on defense.
Armenia has also diverted weapons purchases away from Russia unto other countries namely India and France after Russia tacitly approved Azerbaijan’s annexation of Nagorno-Karabakh.
Azerbaijan has also indicated it wanted to annex even more territory from Armenia.
