The ethnic cleansing of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) and its Azerbaijanification is being actively supported in the international sphere by Russia and Vladimir Putin. Russia was supposed to guarantee Armenia’s protection and defense in case it was invaded by Azerbaijan. Armenia was also a member of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CISTO) which supposedly served as Russia’s version of NATO for some ex-Soviet states in the caucus and central Asia.
Russia’s guarantees proved worthless at the end of the day and Armenia is today seeking closer collaboration with NATO.
