Malta has a UNESCO National Commission funded by the government, currently under the remit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Supposedly, the UNESCO National Commissioner’s role is to liaise between the national country and UNESCO and promote UNESCO’s activities. Malta has a UNESCO National Commissioner, Ray Bondin, who has served in this role under various administrations.
In more bizarre news, Malta’s UNESCO National Commissioner has recently been visiting Azerbaijan in his official capacity, seemingly to whitewash the ethnic cleansing of Artsakh, which the Azeris refer to as Nagorno-Karabakh. He’s been doing so by praising the efforts of the Azeri government in “restoring” the heritage of Artsakh which is mostly and originally, Armenian and Christian. After retaking control of Artsakh and displacing up to 100,000 Armenians from their homes (now being turned into student dormitories for Azeris), the Azeris have been redoing Armenian and Christian churches in their own style calling it “restoration”. Bizarrely, Ray Bondin is visiting Azerbaijan as National UNESCO Commissioner and even applauding the Azeris’ effort. The Azeris have also been happily milking his comments about their “work”.
The Church in the photo above is actually the Armenian Ghazanchetsots Cathedral (Holy Saviour Cathedral) which historically has been different under the Armenian Christians. The picture below is how Ghazanchetsots Cathedral as it appeared under Armenian control. Note that the Azeris took out the conical dome which historically has been there for centuries.
Ray Bondin seems to put Azerbaijan as a priority according to his social media profile. He has a lot of pictures in Azerbiajan and even with government officials.
Despite the simple fact that the Azeris have historically been ethnically cleansed by the Turks and now the Azeris, Ray Bondin insists that we shouldn’t just listen to one version, and all the rest is propaganda.
So let’s present some propaganda for Malta’s UNESCO National Commissioner to review.
