The MUT has been locked with the Ministry of Education in negotiations over new salaries and working conditions for teachers and the result of these negotiations are currently being communicated with the union’s members. The MUT will be holding a face to face meeting with members on Thursday 30th May to vote for the newly proposed working conditions. The venue has not been announced yet, and as a union with thousands of members, it is going to be difficult to pull off. Teachers who won’t be attending the meeting on 30th May will have to vote online.
Members of the MUT can only view the proposed contract in person and the document is not being distributed online in digital form. This new procedure to vote for the the new proposals isn’t allowing the union’s members enough time and space to discuss the proposals. What is also problematic is that the MUT’s council has not been following its own statute because it has not held a single general and extraordinary meeting in the past 4 years since its latest committee members were elected. So, basically ordinary members have been disconnected from the union’s leadership and had no chance to propose or make extensive changes to the union and its procedures.
Irrespective of the proposals being made, members of the MUT are not being given enough time to discuss the proposals between each other, and the new procedure goes against traditional and statutory practice of making these big decisions during Extraordinary General Conferences. There is pressure from the government to quickly conclude a deal, and the MUT leadership seems to be transferring this pressure onto its members.
