As of late last year, an additional 33 live horses are being imported to Malta every week

The new influx of wild and exotic live animals imported into Malta has increased due to leaner regulations introduced by Agriculture Minister Anton Refalo and Animals Rights Parliamentary Secretary Alicia Bugeja Said. As of late last year, an additional 33 live horses per week are being imported into Malta for animal feed.

The live horses are imported to be slaughtered specifically for the feed of animals like lions and tigers. The Labour government has allowed leaner regulations for the keeping of exotic and wild animals to appease certain individuals such as Charles Polidano and Anton Rea Cutajar.

The breeding and selling of dangerous and big animals like tigers and lions is often used as a method of money laundering for drug dealers given that the selling price of the cubs can fluctuate at great degree.
