As Prime Minister Robert Abela loses his personality cult and authority with the Labour Party, he has become humbled, yet he still doesn’t understand his predicament entirely and what actually needs to be done. This is a very significant event in Robert Abela’s life because it is for the first time, his first ever serious personal crisis that he faces.
His problem is that he sees the possibility of crashing further down in defeat with looming legal problems about his past that has been uncovered as he governed, or rather, wrecked the country. Meanwhile, his Party’s top brass is engaged in trying to understand the move and direction forward. Their preoccupation is they would split the Labour Party if they inevitably chose to publicly detach from Joseph Muscat. Given that this move and direction is inevitable, the Labour Party feels ever more compelled to take this decision. Meanwhile, Robert Abela has a serious crisis of government especially in the areas where Joseph Muscat’s have covered up previous corruption: Miriam Dalli with energy, Jonathan Attard with the Justice System and the wreckage at the Police. This decision would have been taken immediately had Chris Fearne become leader of the Labour Party, and in the situation the Labour Party would have easily absorbed the hit given its strength at the polls. Having this delayed this decision for a long time now, Robert Abela has done even more damage to the Party and the nation as a whole.
