Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas is set to become the EU’s High Representative

Having missed her opportunity to become NATO’s Secretary-General, with Mark Rutte being earmarked for the role, Kaja Kallas is now being pushed by the European Council to take the role of the EU’s High Representative. Kaja Kallas is the current Prime Minister of Estonia and has been a vociferous advocate and supporter of Ukraine in Brussels. Kallas has repeatedly reiterated her stance that Europe should take a tougher approach with Russian sanctions.

Keeping the top EU roles with the same individuals shows a strong sign of unity in Europe in a time of crisis, while the nomination of Kaja Kallas as the EU High Representative marks a shift towards a stronger approach towards Russia in contrast with the position taken by the incumbent Josep Borrell.
