The new Maltese EU Commissioner: Glenn Micallef

Glenn Micallef has had one of the most comfortable career progressions in the history of the Labour Party. He started as the government’s Head of EU Affairs in Brussels with little or no experience until he was recalled to Malta to serve as the Chief of Staff of Prime Minister Robert Abela.

Following a disastruous track-record in government, Glenn Micallef will be awarded with the post of EU Commissioner. He has been replaced by Mark Mallia, a former Aide-De-Camp of Goerge Abela when he was President. Theoretically, it makes sense in having very qualified military officers occupying top government and civil-service posts, but Mark Mallia doesn’t have a good reputation.

Mark Mallia’s appiointment indicates that George Abela, Robert Abela’s father, still has a lot of influence and control over his son and the current Premiership.
