The Malta Union of Teachers presents the updated salary proposals by the Ministry of Education to its members

Today, the Malta Union of Teachers has presented to its members a new set of proposals by the Ministry of Education over the educators’ salary agreement. The agreement was postponed after members protested various of the proposals made to them. Despite an effort by the Ministry of Education to rush an agreement before the European Parliament elections, members of the MUT refused to accept the proposed agreement and negotiations were postponed after the elections.

The newly updated agreement has some increases in the allowances and an adjustment to the amount of years needed for timely progression. Allowances for Learning Support Assistants have been increased, but there seems to be no new significant changes to their status or salary from the previous proposals.

You can read the updated proposals here, however MUT is still refusing to send a copy of the actual agreement to its members.

    Interesting why members are not allowed to have a copy of the agreement, perhdps they don’t know how to read it for thdmselves or is there a other reason?

    Public service workers too have not been given a copy of the agreement signed during Expo of May 2024, hush hush baby!

    Why thank you for posting that. Otherwise I would never have seen it. Teachers who aren’t with MUT or are with another union, don’t have any right to read the agreement. How more bizarre can it get?

    It is disheartening that an institution purportedly championing meritocracy, and aspiring to emulate the educational standards of Finland and Estonia, has introduced a collective agreement devoid of incentives for experienced teachers to pursue further studies. Aren’t we supposed to attract (and retain) the creme de la creme? Under this agreement, teachers with over twenty years of service, whether they hold a Master’s degree or not, receive virtually the same remuneration. Imagine any other profession where academic credentials have been reduced to mere formalities with the leading union’s blessing.

    Regarding the Malta Union of Teachers (MUT), I long chose to disaffiliate upon realising its evident collusion with the government. The union has become notably reticent in addressing the pervasive political nepotism influencing promotions. We are witnessing a scenario where the outcomes of promotional interviews are predetermined, not based on qualifications or hard work, but political connections. To add insult to injury, while this government has filled the top ranks of the educational management by the who’s who of Labour (105 assistant director, scale 5) it is trying to establish the image that it puts teachers well-being at the forefront. I have a feeling that the MUT’s top management are going to get a nice cushy government job if this collective agreement goes through.
