Viktor Orban meets Vladimir Putin in Moscow as his first act with the Presidency of the European Union

Hungary has just received the rotating European Union Presidency, and Viktor Orban, Hungary’s President, used this opportunity to visit Moscow and meet with Vladimir Putin.

Incumbent President of the European Council Charles Michel warned Viktor Orban that the European Presidency has no mandate to discuss with Putin on Europe’s behalf and reiterated that no discussions on Ukraine should be held without Ukraine’s own involvement and approval. Orban and Putin discussed ways to end the war in Ukraine. Asked by the BBC Russian correspondent, Steve Rosenberg on accusations by Brussels of appeasement, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs Pรฉter Szijjรกrtรณ said “Ok, we are a sovereign country.” Being a Russian asset doesn’t sound very sovereign, however.

Putin is under an arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court for abducting thousands of children from Ukraine.
