562 out of 623 votes for Roberta Metsola: opening speech attached

Roberta Metsola has been re-elected as President of the European Parliament with 562 out of 623 votes, a record show of support. The vote was between Roberta Metsola of the European People’s Party and Irene Montero of the Left. Irene Montero is a Spanish MEP of the Spanish communist party Podemos which has an anti-NATO position.

The vote for Roberta Metsola was a strong show of support for European institutions and the political centre, and a sign of approval of Europe’s current status quo.

Urusula von der Leyen’s vote is set for later this week.
